We built the app we wanted to be sent
Soula started from a small observation: the apps got very good at showing people faces, and never got good at helping two of them talk.
The story
Everyone has the same evening. You open an app, you move through forty faces in four minutes, you match with someone, and then the conversation dies in the space where a first message should be. Not because either person was uninterested — because there was nothing specific to say. A photo does not give you an opening. An answer does.
So we built the opposite. On Soula you reach someone by replying to something they wrote, or recorded, or posted about their Saturday. The reply carries the thing that caught your attention, so the other person can see why you turned up. It is a small structural change and it changes the whole tone of a conversation.
The rest followed from there. Five introductions a day, because that is a number you can actually think about. Intent on the front of the profile, because mismatched expectations waste more time than bad photos ever did. Verification, because trust is the price of entry. And a 72-hour window to say hello, so your chat list is people you are talking to rather than a museum of maybes.
The name is about the part of dating that the metrics never captured: you are not shopping, you are hoping to recognise someone. We would like Soula to be the app that people delete because it worked.

Intention over volume
Five introductions a day is not a limitation we apologise for. It is the whole idea. A person can consider five people properly; nobody considers five hundred.
Say the true thing early
Intent sits on the front of every profile. Looking for marriage, something casual, or genuinely unsure — all three are respectable, and stating them saves everyone weeks.
Safety is a feature, not a page
Verification, silent blocking, prioritised reports and private-by-default fields are built into the product. This site has a safety page because the app has safety work behind it.
Private by default
Your date of birth, exact location, filters and deal breakers are never shown to anyone. Every optional field has its own switch, and sensitive answers are never used for advertising.
Warm, never gamified
No streaks, no confetti for opening the app, no artificial scarcity. The only timer in Soula gives you 72 hours to say hello, and it exists so your chat list stays honest.
Built for more than one language
Soula ships in five languages because people date across them. Filters respect that instead of guessing from where your phone happens to be.
How we make money
Plainly, from subscriptions
Soula is free, and free is a real product rather than a trailer: the Daily 5, unlimited likes, every safety tool. Soula+ is for people who want the limits removed and more control over who sees them.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. Sensitive answers — orientation, religion, politics, ethnicity — are never used to target anything at you. That is written into our Privacy Policy, not just into a blog post.
